Conference for European Banking Supervisors, November 20, 2000 Copenhagen. The convergence of Financial Supervisory Practices - across national and sectoral borders.

The European financial sector is in a period of rapid change - due to integration across national and sectoral borders. European financial supervisors must meet this challenge by increasing their efforts to achieve a convergence of supervisory practices. Such convergence may be achieved in several ways. Ranging from European regulation in one end to adoption of agreements between supervisory authorities in areas, where they do have the necessary competences, in the other.

In order to contribute to this process of convergence - and its visibility, the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority ( Finanstilsynet ) has decided to host today's conference on this subject. The focus is on convergence of banking supervisory practices across national (European) borders. However as financial conglomerates play an increasing role in Europe, the convergence of supervisory practices across sectoral borders is on the agenda too.

The participants of today's Conference are hence senior representatives of European banking supervisory authorities represented in the Groupe de Contact, the members or observers of the Groupe itself and representatives of some of the European regulatory committees.

Finanstilsynet consider it important that the process of convergence is based on transparency. Not only for reasons of accountability of supervisory authorities; but also in order to be able to receive valuable input from other concerned parties. The latter is the reason that today's program also includes speakers from outside the supervisory community.
